The Felix3D Team has spent a lot of time researching the history of volumetric imaging. Nevertheless we ask you to help us by completing this Hall of Fame, so please send us descriptions and pictures of yet unknown (or here only preliminary stated) experimental setups or prototypes. We would be glad for any new descriptions and if possible one photo of the display and one of the researching team.

Phosphor Screen in CRT
E. Withey
1958

A more practical attempt suggested by E. Withey later in 1958 moved the phosphorous screen within the CRT rather than the whole CRT itself . The cathode ray screen is mounted within a vacuum tube behind a transparent viewing globe. The screen is driven in oscillation, piston-like, toward and away from the observer along the Z-axis while an electron gun illuminates it from the rear.

Three.dimensional display
Sher, Lawrence D.
1978

The three-dimensional display system disclosed herein employs the varying focal properties of a vibrating mirror to cause sequentially generated image components to appear juxtaposed in space. The mirror is constructed as a circular reflective plate having substantial stiffness and resilience. The plate is weighted about its rim and is supported by a flexible support ring engaging the plate along a concentric circular locus spaced inside of the rim so as to provide a useful curvature over substantially the entire surface of the plate.

Three-dimensional laser driven display apparatus
Muckerheide; Myron C.
1989

A three-dimensional laser driven display apparatus for the controlled projection and manipulation of laser generated images toward the creation of a three-dimensional display. The apparatus comprises an image signal generator, raster generator, laser beam generator and a varifocal mirror wherein the image signal generator and raster generator spatially encode the laser beam image. The laser beam is reflected by the raster generator onto the varifocal mirror, the vibration of which serves to spatially decode the laser beam image whereby a three-dimensional image is viewable projected in space standing off of the surface of the varifocal mirror. The interposition of an imaging surface between the raster generator and the varifocal mirror causes the three-dimensional display to be viewed directly upon the surface of the vibrating varifocal mirror.

Reciprocating Screen
C. Tsao
1995

Recently C. Tsao described a reciprocating approach, where an opticalmechanical mechanism consisting of a screen and a converging lens is moving back and forth. A LED projector and a slide projector with a high speed LCD shutter were used as the image source.

Apparatus and method for volumetric image reconstruction of volumetric images
Radulescu, Sorin
2005

A volumetric display apparatus is disclosed which includes, one or more movable generator means to receive a multitude of light sources, wherein said light sources have a non-linear spatial distribution and are independently accessed for unequal access durations, in which said light sources have multiple-element structure with independent direction and intensity control, in which light blocking means controls a direction and intensity of light beams generated by light sources, and a method employing a psudo-uniform volumetric image space in which volumetric image elements have a sane size.
